ECRI Weekly Leading Index Definition

An index, released each Friday by the Economic Cycle Research Institute, that identifies turning points in the economic cycle that are indicated by pronounced changes in the index. The index contains money supply data, stock prices, an industrial markets price index developed by the organization, mortgage applications, bond quality spread, bond yields, and initial jobless claims. An advantage of the index is that it is very timely.
  • "Anything that Geoffrey Moore does I follow very closely, because he taught me Statistics 101 in college." - Alan Greenspan
  • "Geoffrey Moore, the institute's founder and director of research, is widely viewed as the father of 'leading indicators.'" - The Wall Street Journal
  • "No one speaks with more authority about the economy's turning points." - Fortune Magazine
